DIE POLISIE-SPAN VAN KOLONEL ULF BOBERG VAN DIE EERSTE REEKS-MOORDENAAR VAS GETREK HET.
Cornelius Burger circa 1900
Daar was kinders.
Sy kranksinnigheid was progressief.

THE POLICE TEAM OF COLONEL ULF BOBERG, one of the FIRST SERIES KILLER HAS BEEN caught.
Cornelius Burger circa 1900
During 1936 and 1937 one Cornelius Burger, a man in his thirties, stong and healthy , killed five prostitutes (of whom we know) He threw their bodies on the road between Johannesburg and Potchefstroom. Cornelius drove a big old black car. He also taok their handbags as souvenirs and keeps them behind a cupboard at his house as a souvenir ....
Cornelius was married, but he and his wife had separate lives. Separated from bed and table. There were children. They no longer shared a bedroom, in fact they barely spoke to each other, says the then Colonel, Ulf Boberg. During Cornelius' criminal drives he got a venereal disease as a gift, he suspected it and did not want to go to the mining doctor, he was too scared of dismissal and that his family or mine boss would find out. No one suspected it. Cornelius swore revenge on prostitutes, whom he blamed for his problem, he later described them to Ulf in the one interview as, sluts, skinny witches, human rubble and rats. This was a big problem because untreated syphilis bacterium, Treponema pallidum enters the nervous system with time and can go the infection so far and end with neurosyphilis, which can mean a fatal end. He later went to see an urban doctor who confirmed his suspicion.
After a milkman found a fourth body, Boberg decides that it's time to act seriously. He assembled a team of detectives and decided that they should enter into an agreement with the Johannesburg prostitutes, and for now 'ceasefire' to catch this dangerous man. The street girls agreed. A few detectives were assigned to each prostitute. They would watch her all night and record the registration numbers of all the pickers. The prostitutes had to get the men to drop them off at the same place as soon as they did business. Only after all the girls had come in for the night and everyone was safely home could the police go home that night. They did this for a few months. Remember the period 1936 / 7e, no profilers, no previous data to work on, only absolute own police initiative, and doing what he thinks is the right thing to do.
Until one night, just after midnight, Ulf Boberg waited for his detectives to come in for closing, but one of them did not return. Ulf wanted to send a search party when the detective finally showed up with the news that his prostitute, Mavis Davids, had not returned. The detective gave Ulf the registration number of the last car to pick her up. They decided to track down Mavis before going to pick up and confront the alleged killer. Detectives searched the Potchefstroom and Heidelburg, JHB roads, they still rode sidecar motorcycles. Mavis was found in a bad way, but alive, on the Potchefstroom road. She apparently tried to escape when he stopped the car, but he grabbed her and tried to strangle her.
After that, Ulf and his group of detectives waited in front of Cornelius' house. He did not resist and led them to the cluster of handbags (yes, more than the number of known murdered ...). A medical examination revealed that Cornelius was insane due to his venereal disease and could not be tried. His insanity was progressive. He was therefore locked up in an institution, and did die of his venereal disease a few years later.
